I've not seen the film, but it's my understanding that much did get cut. As to Pullman's books' anti-Church slant, they are that. (Aside: you've probably noted that most of what passes for atheism these days is actually opposition to organized religion and its excesses and abuses . . . and what genuinely-thinking Christian doesn't have his/her OWN list of such things?)
